At the end of January, we celebrated our Local Studies Library moving into the 21 st century when we added the book catalogue to Essex. This consolidation brought together extensive and far-ranging collections, including natural specimens, ethnological objects, books and historical memorabilia, all focusing on the area in and around Essex County.

In the late s, the Essex Institute refined its mission to the collection and presentation of regional art, history and architecture. Essex is a county full of history, variety and also mystery. Throughout the county, we have towns which are as old as the Romans, and towns built less than years ago.

With all this variety, it's understandable that there will be things that just don't fit in. To those who have Essex blood in their veins the county is often little less than a religion The first image from Fred’s book I want to share with you is a map from the inside front page.
